Science and Nature Centers
Science and nature lovers rejoice! There are plenty of places to spend a day in Charlotte immersed in Science, Nature or both. A few are just outside of the area (Grandfather Mountain is in the Blue Ridge Mountains – a 2 hour drive), but most are very close and all are worth checking out.

Sports in Charlotte
There are many options for sports fans in the Charlotte area. There are several professional teams, some semi-pro teams, and the area colleges and universities field exciting teams as well. North Carolina is ACC basketball country – as evidenced by the fierce loyalties shown by the fans during games. The city has been known to host public viewings for big games, with everyone proudly wearing shirts and sweats from their favorite school.
Charlotte’s sports scene includes:
The Carolina Panthers – who play in the beautiful Bank of America Stadium in downtown Charlotte. The stadium seats approximately 73,000 for a game.
The Quail Hollow Championship Golf Tournament is held in early May each year at the beautiful Quail Hollow Country Club in South Charlotte. This premier PGA Tour event never fails to attract the top golfers on tour.
The Campions; Charlotte Checkers AA Hockey is also featured at Bobcats Arena. A fun, affordable family night out!
NASCAR at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Many top teams have their base of operations within a few miles of the track as well, which are sometimes open for tours.
The NASCAR Hall of Fame.
An annual event, the Queen’s Cup Steeplechase is run on the last Saturday in April in Mineral Springs, just 30 minutes from downtown Charlotte. The site has been heralded as one of the nicest tracks on the Steeplechase Circuit, with a gorgeous infield and a tiered viewing area at the finish line.
Charlotte Knights AAA Baseball is played all summer at the beautiful BB&T Park stadium in downtown Charlotte. This is another great affordable family fun night out.
US National Whitewater Center (USNWC). This amazing facility offers Olympic level whitewater kayaking and canoeing & training, as well as the largest outdoor climbing center in the US, bike and hiking trails, and a challenge course. Take it outside!
Soccer: Charlotte Independence is in the Second Division of the United Soccer Leagues (USL). This team is very community-oriented, offering camps and clinics, as well as exciting play.
